How to Communicate With Your Kids when It Seems Impossible
Most people think that being a parent is the most difficult job in the world. You don’t get paid, you don’t get rest days, it is basically a 24-hour job and you have to be on-duty for the rest of your life. That is why people get to have a choice whether they wish to have children or not because it is such a huge responsibility. That alone is already tough, what more parenting a teenager.
Most parents believe that the most difficult stage that they need to handle their children is when they reach their teenage years, this is where all parents are out to the test. Simply because if you and your teen manage to survive this together, then there is a big chance that they will most likely make pretty good decisions when they become young adults.
However, nowadays, teens seem to be a little more difficult to handle because of the modern world we are living in, that is why parents must do everything they can to be able to guide their children, and the best thing to do is to simply have a good relationship with them, and use the power of communication. Here are some communications tips that you could use:
It is true that we are talking about teenagers here, but then again, before they were teens, they are children. Children are clever, so the best way to have a good relationship with them is to start as early as possible.
Time is everything, if you give them enough time and attention when they are still young, then they would feel as if they really are worth it, it’s simple as that. Make traditions and routines while having fun with them, you’re supposed to be their best friend that they could lean on to all the time, just make sure they don’t forget they’re still your parents. Be true to them and they will let you in because once you’re in, all you need to do is to stay there.
DON’T FIGHT WITH THEM
It is definitely inevitable not to have an argument with your teens, it is just a normal thing. However, you must always try to calm down and simply listen to whatever they have to say, once they are done, then make them listen to you. It is very important that you must settle it right then and there, don’t let them walk out on you and don’t walk out on them. Apologize if necessary, your teens will eventually realize that it is not nice to fight with their parents and they will feel bad as well once you have apologized.
This is something you must teach your children no matter how old they are, take full responsibility for your actions at all times, and apologize if necessary.
SHOW RESPECT AT ALL TIMES
Most people say that respect must be earned, and it is true. As a parent, your children must respect you as their guardian, but then again, you must let them feel that you also respect them as a person. Teens are very particular about their privacy, and let them know that it is a privilege so they must not do anything that would ruin your trust. Let them know that you are always there for them and that it is okay to keep things private as long as it doesn’t involve anything that would harm them.
HAVE AN OPEN MIND AND LISTEN
Most teenagers want their parents to simply listen to them, as simple as that. However, some parents find this very difficult to do. Most parents think that they are the authority and that whatever they say goes because they are parents.
That is where it goes wrong, this is not a dictatorship, this is a relationship with your children. It must be given and take, if you want them to listen then you must listen, as an adult, you have to see things in a wider perspective because you have more experience in life compared to them. Listen to whatever they wish to say, let them express their thoughts and feelings.
There are different parenting techniques, but what they have in common, is that parents only want what is best for their children. No decent parent would want their children to live a terrible life. Keep your mind open and just always listen, and you’ll be fine.
You were once a teenager so you know what they’re going through, try to do the things you wish your parents did when you were they age and try to avoid doing what they did that you wish they didn’t. It may be a little too complicated, but if you are parenting a teen, then you would totally understand.
