If You Have These Personalities at Home, Your Family Needs Counseling
Every family is different from the other. We all have those members with embarrassing traits. Right from the ones, we don’t get along with, and the one who drives us crazy. But, end of the day, they are family, and we put up with all their quirks. However, some times they go past the line to an extent where you can no longer bear to live under the same roof.
You might need professional intervention. It might seem a little extra to take your family for a counseling session. However, remember that it is for the collective well-being!
But how do you know where to draw the line for acceptable family behavior? What traits qualify as destructive? When and how should you approach a counselor? Does counseling only entail for families with members that have cases of mental illness or stress? Well, the answer is simple, if it is bothering you and all attempts to fix relationships have failed, you will need the help of a professional to deal with the subject. However, to further simplify your concern, here are a few personality traits to look for in your family members to see if professional intervention is necessary.
The Drama Queen
Well, this one needs no introduction. Everyone one of us has been there during our teenage years, where emotional meltdowns were an everyday thing. However, if you have a member in your family who is way past 25 years, and overreacts to every situation, it’s time to sit down and have a chat. The drama that ensues every situation could be anything from a desperate cry for help to a mental disorder that could be bothering them, or unresolved conflicts with a family member. So, fix up an appointment with a counselor and see how you can remedy the situation.
Everyone in a Blended Family
While the other categories are about just a few individuals in the family, this is one instance where the whole family would need counseling. When you are in blended family rifts are bound to happen and take a toll on mental health. We are all familiar with sibling fights, but the issues are a tad bit more complicated when half-siblings and step-parents step in. Things aren’t as rosy as they seem on the Modern Family.
And these misunderstandings, need to establish dominance, insecurity, etc., might lead to rifts. To avoid this, it is always advisable to have a family counseling session to bridge any barriers, resolve conflicts, and create one big harmonious family.
The Lone Wolf
Dealing with a teenager is tough, more so if this person is a loner who likes to keep to himself, you’re in for a fierce battle. But then, when they’re over that phase, they do come back and start bonding with the family. This is the case with every member of the family, where they might want to take some time off and stay alone.
It is a healthy habit to have some “me” time as it strengthens bonds and helps people get a hold of their life. However, if you see this happening way too often with your family and notice them drifting apart, it’s time to make a trip to the counselor’s office.
The Grudge Holder
Most families have this one person who can turn everything into a sour fight. They hold grudges on people for several years in a row and seek revenge. While this plot sure does sound good in a TV soap opera, it gets daunting to deal with daily. Living life with a pessimistic outlook, they go on to believe that the whole world is out to get them. Developing or holding grudges based on incidents that others could barely remember, they make life difficult for everyone in the family. Instead of sending just one person for counseling, it would help to sign up as a family. This way, the counselor can get a better understanding of the incidents from multiple perspectives.
If something is bothering you about the dynamics in your family, always approach a counselor. There’s no better judge than you to tell when something is wrong. So when you see it, try and fix it. Remember, there’s no stigma in visiting a counselor after all the happiness and well-being of your family is of utmost importance!
