This Is What Can Happen When You Take A Break From Facebook
We have come a long way from the days of telegrams and snail mail to instant messaging and social media. Communication has undoubtedly improved by leaps and bounds, but at the same time, we have learned about its downsides, too. A recent study by New York and Stanford University showed a number of positive changes when a person quits Facebook. Study or not, we all have realized that a bit social media detox will do us a world of good. However, it is truly difficult to quit Facebook, even just for a month, but it’s not impossible if you’re really determined. With time, you will get used to it and realize that quitting Facebook isn’t so bad.
Here is what to expect if you do decide to say goodbye to Facebook!
Better Connections With Friends And Family
Once you ditch Facebook, you will find more time for everything. You might miss out on who checked in where, who got a new haircut, or who went on a vacation, but once you are over it, you will realize that those things are trivial and don’t really matter in your life. The people who do matter will always be in touch with you or vice versa. Facebook’s Messenger app isn’t your only option for communication — you can email, call, or, better yet, meet up with them. Now that you are not scrolling through your phone all the time, you do have time to hang out with friends and family.
More Time For Yourself
You can’t just open your browser now and head to Facebook. So, you would need to find other things to do to kill time. What about going old-fashioned with books? If books were your thing before Facebook happened, revisit this hobby. It is a lot better for the mind and body. Did you know the light emanated by phones or computers is bad for your eyes, and the constant usage of the touchpad is terrible for our hands? It has already caught the attention of medical practitioners! As for your mind, not trying to get validation from strangers and acquaintances will do your mind a lot of good. Apart from that, Facebook addiction is a real thing, and it is as bad as any drug addiction. So by quitting Facebook, you will be doing yourself a favor!
Less Informed About World News
Quitting Facebook will also mean that you will be less informed about the news, and chances are you will be less politically polarized which is not a bad thing. Other studies have proved that learning about news first thing in the morning — knowing how many people died in disasters or through heinous crimes — isn’t great for your mental health.
So, are you ready for a Facebook detox? If you’re not ready to quit for good, try to go through a month without it and see how you feel about it. By doing so, you’ll have a general idea of what it feels like if you aren’t hooked onto Facebook 24/7. Do you think you can do it?
