Treating Psoriasis: Latest Diet and Nutrition Solutions You Should Know About

Several people are suffering from the skin condition called psoriasis. About 1% to 2% of people in the United States or 5.5 million have psoriasis. In the UK, about 2% people are affected by this skin condition.

Psoriasis is a skin disorder which is characterized by red, flaky, crusty and itchy patches of skin covered with silvery scales. It is usually appearing on elbows, scalp, knees, legs, trunk, and nails. These patches could be itchy or sore.

Psoriasis could affect both, men and women. Some people have severe psoriasis, and some have just minor irritation. For those who have severe psoriasis, it could affect their quality life. Fortunately, psoriasis is not contagious.

What Causes Psoriasis?

This skin disease causes the patient much itch and discomfort.

Psoriasis could be genetic and inherited. About one-third of people with psoriasis have at least one family member who might have psoriasis as well.

People who have psoriasis are also known to have an increased production of skin cells, which could be made and replaced every three to four weeks. On the other hand, in psoriasis, it only lasts about three to seven days. The increased in the production of skin cells generates patches linked with psoriasis. This is associated with a problem in the immune system, in which it attacks the healthy skin cells of those with psoriasis.

What Are the Risk Factors of Psoriasis?

Psoriasis could go away for a while then return. However, it may also be aggravated by some factors. The environmental factors like sunburns, smoking, alcoholism, and streptococcal sore throat may increase the frequency of flares. The injury to the skin may also worsen psoriasis. These include skin infection, excessive scratching and skin inflammation. There are also medicines that could aggravate this skin condition.

The diet of those with psoriasis may also be quite affected. Most of those with psoriasis said that they found relief by altering their diet.

The following are the four main approaches to a diet of those with psoriasis:

1. Weight Loss

The dropped in weight could affect the skin and joints of those with psoriasis. Dr. Luigi Naldi, The British Journal of Dermatology study’s lead author, said that there was a clear correlation between the amount of weight loss and the improvement of psoriasis. He further said that patients who lost more weight experienced a larger improvement in psoriasis. He added that even a small amount of weight loss could have a big impact on the severity of the disease.

A study also shows that obesity is linked with the increased risk for a psoriatic disease. Dr. Wilson Lao, the co-author of this study that was published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, said that obesity may provide the nudge that causes psoriasis in people who are already predisposed to it.

With this, it is important for those with psoriasis to maintain and control their weight. They should eat in moderation and refrain from eating and drinking too many sweets and soft drinks, among others.

2. Opting for a Healthy Weight

People with psoriasis must have a healthy weight. You must calculate your body mass index (BMI) and not go beyond the normal weight. You must also burn calories by having any kind of physical activity.

3. Weight Loss Plan

Psoriasis Diet: It is important to follow the right diet to “feed” your system and fight psoriasis 

One way to maintain your weight is to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat dairy products.

You may also include lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, beans, and nuts. You should avoid trans fats and limit cholesterol and salt. You must also refrain from eating refined sugars and processed foods.

4. Improve Heart Health

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease just like heart disease. With this, you must reduce inflammation and improve your heart health.

You must eat fish at least twice a week especially mackerel, albacore tuna and salmon. These fishes contain omega-3 fatty acids that could lower the risk of coronary artery disease. Eat lean meats and do not consume the poultry skin.

Refrain from eating too much sodium. You must consume less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium a day. Limit your intake of alcohol. In case, you have severe psoriasis, you must not drink alcohol at all.
