Tips to Make Antidepressants Work For You
People’s mood is directly affected by brain chemicals which are known as neurotransmitters. Generally, people suffering from depression and other mood disorders are likely to have altered levels of brain chemicals. Antidepressants function by assisting in normalizing the levels of these chemicals. The antidepressants make the brain chemicals function effectively according to their functionality.
People that are suffering from complicated mood disorders are better handled by a doctor who is an expert in medications that can help to balance the chemistry of the brain. These type of doctors are known by the name of psychiatrists. It must also be understood that depression and mental health disorders are serious issues which should be treated by a medical professional.
Types of Antidepressants Prescribed By Psychiatrists
It is well known that different types of drugs work differently. More of the neurotransmitter serotonin is available in the brain when selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs are prescribed. Medications like Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil are a few examples of SSRIs which are commonly prescribed.
Tricyclic antidepressants which are known as TCAs make it possible for more serotonin and norepinephrine to be available in the brain. As every individual is different, people who are suffering from depression are initially prescribed one of the SSRIs which have been mentioned. If no results are being observed, they may be shifted to a tricyclic. However, all the drugs have certain negative side effects and risks which people should be aware of.
People that Take Antidepressants Must Be Patient With The Drugs
Antidepressants do not have the ability to deliver results instantly and they are generally effective when they are paired with psychotherapy. Antidepressants can take anywhere between 1 to 3 weeks before they start functioning. The time required for reaching maximum efficacy may be even more.
Most of the symptoms associated with depression will eventually begin to improve after the treatment of antidepressants is advised. In certain cases, individuals may be resistant to antidepressants of certain types and therefore doctors may use a trial and error method with other medications before identifying which one works effectively. The effects of the drugs may not be known within the short time because they all have different types of risks associated with them.
People suffering from depression must understand that the antidepressants will become effective only after 4 to 6 weeks. If they are still experiencing symptoms after that time span mentioned, they should have a discussion with their physician who may decide to increase the dosage or even switch to another variety. In many cases, it has been observed that switching medication works and delivers the results. The maximum benefits from an antidepressant may only be felt after a three-month period. Some individuals may notice that the antidepressants are not working and in such cases, they should again have a consultation with their healthcare practitioner. They must always bear in mind that depression, if left untreated, can be a serious issue.
Types of Antidepressants Suggested
With the market for antidepressants being huge, brand names and generic drugs are both available for the benefit of people. The US FDA has confirmed that the safety, strength and quality of both, the generic drugs and the brand-name variety are practically the same. However, some people have reported that they do not feel they are getting enough benefits from the generic variety when compared to brand names. According to a conducted research, some generic medications may be absorbed differently by the body in contrast to brand-name medications. People who believe that a generic medication is not working in the same manner as a brand name should have a discussion with their physician to understand the differences.
Antidepressants Should Not Be Discontinued Prematurely
The treatment for depression with the use of antidepressants can last for several months or even a year. Patients are advised not to lower the dosage of their medication or discontinue taking it simply because they are feeling better. In such cases, the depression is likely to make a comeback and cause more problems. Patients should stay on the dosage recommended for as long as it is recommended by their physician. The medication must be taken at the same time every day to achieve maximum benefits. People who are suffering from depression may have difficulties in complying with the treatment recommended and therefore should choose a convenient time for having the medication which can be easily remembered.
Some people may experience some side effects from antidepressants but this is a normal occurrence and should be discussed with the doctor. Some of the common side effects include an increase or decrease in appetite, sleeplessness or sleeping too much, weight gain or difficulties with intimate relationships. The side effects are mostly temporary and will go away after some time. However, on no occasion should a patient discontinue the medication prescribed because they will not be allowing the antidepressants to succeed.
