What Is a Mental Health Day?

In certain places in the first world and countries like the United States and New Zealand people have the option of taking a mental health day off when the employee does not report to work and takes a day off for reasons of mental health. A feeling exists in the minds of many people that a mental health day is taken when the employee just does not feel like working for the day but in most cases, it is related to an actual mental illness rather than the desire to stop work.

A mental health day is not given to the employee to have a good time but rather it is an acknowledgment by the employer that he or she is, in fact, suffering from a mental illness which needs them to take a day off to obtain the treatment needed for the recovery. It is unlike Independence Day or any other holiday where celebrations are held and fireworks can be seen in the skies.

When can employees consider taking a mental health day off?

Employees can also consider taking a mental health day of the day have been neglecting themselves for any reasons. Everyone needs some time on occasions to recharge their minds and a little time alone to practice some self-care can help them perform better.

Attending to mental health problems is another matter which needs concern by the individual because healthcare professionals will not visit the workplace of the employee. He or she can decide to take a mental health day to see their health care provider and to get their medications or an appointment with the therapist and taking a day off is the only way they can address the issues they are facing.

Should leaders be concerned about the mental health of the employee?

It would be great if all employers decided to show concern to the mental health of their employees because mental health is important not just for the individual suffering from the problem but for the entire workforce. The US Department of Health and Human Services has estimated that just 17% of the population within the country is functioning at optimal mental health. Approximately 20% of the population is experiencing a diagnosable mental health problem constantly.

Employers should be taking the figures mentioned above into consideration and account for the loss of productivity and absenteeism when they decide that a mental health day is not a requirement but is only an excuse by the employee to stay away from work. Employers will also be burdened with increased costs of healthcare apart from the losses in productivity and the absenteeism.

There is a stigma surrounding mental health but it is essential for everyone to be concerned about this matter and people need to bring changes to their thinking to decide whether the individual is making up the illness or is really suffering from a mental health problem.

They must begin to understand that allowing the employee to take a mental health day off on certain occasions will not just help them build mental strength and improve their mental health but will also need to increase productivity and benefits for the employer. The time has now arrived for all to consider the mental health of individuals without looking at it as a joke of some kind.

Employers, in particular, are required to pay adequate attention to the mental health of their employees for the reasons which have been specified earlier. They must be prepared to acknowledge that the employee has admitted concerns about a mental health problem and is seeking treatment to overcome the illness.

Giving the employee a mental health day off is any day a better option than holding him or her back and letting the situation aggravate.
