Signs You Should Be Aware Of When Spotting Acute Depression
There is a huge difference between sadness and acute depression. In our everyday life, things always do not go well for us, leading us to harbor feelings of frustration, self-pity, and melancholy, but these negative feelings will eventually pass. However, if these continue for two weeks or more and come with some other unusual changes in your lifestyle, there might be a chance that you are suffering from depression. It has been found that almost 7% of American adults suffered from depression at some point in their lives. Sometimes, depression happens after pregnancy, which is called post-partum depression. Also, a seasonal affective disorder that might happen in the months of winter is a kind of depression. Whatever the name might be, these are the signs to look out for if you think you or someone you know who might be suffering from it.
Increased irritability is a sure-shot symptom of depression. Being short-tempered with friends and family, being irritated with things that didn’t use to bother you before, and having frequent mood swings are the tell-tale signs to look out for. The change is especially notable in people who were hitherto very patient and full of compassion and kindness. When a person changes and becomes irritable, he or she becomes less likable as well. Hence, it is hard for friends and family to be compassionate with them and find out what’s wrong. The general reaction would be to avoid them.
Lack Of Personal Hygiene
Often, those who suffer from depression find it difficult to even get up in the morning and step away from their beds. Hence, it is not difficult to imagine how personal hygiene takes a back seat for them when affected by the illness. Most of the time, they feel too exhausted or emotionally overwhelmed to even bother what to wear, brush their teeth, or take a shower. Also, the fact that they are a lot less sociable than before or even isolating themselves from others means that there’s definitely something wrong.
Nagging Sense Of Guilt
It has been found that people suffering from acute clinical depression often have this nagging sense of guilt in their minds. They almost always feel responsible for day-to-day incidents even when they are not to be blamed for it. The problem gets more serious at work. Even if a project is unsuccessful or has some flaws, the person is likely to blame themselves for it and be miserable about it. This adds to the already negative state of mind he or she is in.
Both eating or shopping impulsively can be a clear indicator of your mental health, though experts believe that behaving impulsively might not be the most common symptom of depression. But if the other signs are there, then the impulsive behavior might indicate more than just something to make you feel good. When we are impulsive, it helps us find a fast resolution for our depression and can sometimes help us hide it, too. It also helps us feel great right away which takes away some of the sensations of being depressed.
Experiencing Strange Aches And Pains
Unexplained physical pain is another symptom of depression. Doctors say that pain is often caused by abnormal brain function. However, these aches and pains make it even more difficult for the doctor to diagnose the problem. It is likely that the doctors would start looking for physical issues that might be causing the pain instead of thinking about mental health. Some also opine that the pain happens because of repressed emotions that afflict our brain.
Difficulty In Concentrating Or Relaxing
When suffering from clinical depression, patients find it extremely difficult to concentrate on one thing. Usually, negative thoughts hinder their ability to focus and relax. Physicians often mistake it as signs of ADHD. Any downtime makes them terribly anxious as they end up having extreme negative thoughts that leave them more restless than before.
Thankfully, depression is not taken lightly anymore. More and more people are becoming concerned about their mental health and realizing that it is as important as our physical health. The stigma around depression and other issues has been trumped through mental health awareness. Celebrities have played a big part in this. Several of them have come out with their own story of mental health-related issues which have encouraged common people to do the same. Just remember, if your mental health is getting in the way of your normal life, go see an expert to see what can be done.
