5 Things You’ve Got Wrong About OCD
You might have encountered someone with a strikingly neat handwriting, or has his desk look like it is made for display rather for work. While many people like their things neat all the time, but this does not mean that they suffer from OCD, which is a real medical condition. Here are some things that a lot of people get wrong and often misunderstand about this disorder.
People Who Suffer From OCD Love Keeping Things Neat and Organized All the Time
You might have heard or even said before that you consider yourself really OCD whenever you have that constant impulse to clean. In a lot of ways, this is like saying that you feel like you have cancer because you feel like sleeping all day, or that you feel like you have a rare eating disorder because you did not feel like eating mashed potatoes with your serving of steak.
OCD is more serious than most people think. It is marked by high levels of anxiety and emotional distress. Those who are diagnosed with OCD might have a constant impulse to get things organized and have their own set of rituals, but they do not enjoy doing them. If they do not get things clean, they will get debilitating anxiety.
All Neat Freaks Have OCD
While it is partially true that one of the more visible signs of OCD is an obsession with cleanliness, such as washing hands constantly or being in an endless cycle of cleaning the house, this is not necessarily a disorder. Some people just like getting their things very neat, and this could just be a personality trait and not a debilitating disorder.
This is actually the biggest part of the confusion. To make things clear, you can be cleaning your house as much as you want, but this does not mean you have OCD. It could be just that you like things clean around you. If it is a personality trait, you have control. This means you can choose when to do it or when not to do it.
OCD is All About Cleaning, Hand-Washing and Fearing Germs All The Time
Obsessive-compulsive disorder has been classified as a heterogeneous disorder. This means that it manifests differently in many of its sufferers. There is not just one form of OCD. The truth is, only a portion of people who suffer from OCD are neat freaks. Not all of them have compulsions to keep themselves and their environments clean.
Some of the most common fears or obsessions amongst people with OCD include fear of germs, fear of doing wrong, fear of harming themselves or other people, fear of a loved one dying, fear of certain numbers, words and colors, fear of becoming a sexual predator and a lot more.
It Is Easy to Stop Obsessing About Something
Many might think that people with OCD are just overacting. They are branded as immature, but this is not the real case. People with OCD will have their brains locked at some point, and this makes it excruciatingly hard for them to think about something else until their compulsion gets satisfied. They really need their compulsion resolved. They will feel calm when it gets solved, but this will just be for a cycle before it starts again.
OCD is Always Obvious
OCD is most often missed because many do not get the true nature and dynamics of this disorder. Also, this is a mental illness. For many of its sufferers, the struggle takes place internally with no visible outward symptoms. You could be working or going to school with someone who has a pretty bad case of OCD and never know it. For sure, you have encountered several people in your life who have OCD and might not even know it at all.
There is even a subclass of this disorder called pure obsessional OCD which is a type that involves compulsions that take place just from within the patient’s head. Those who have this subclass might not even be aware that they are suffering from the disorder since they have different symptoms from traditional depictions.
