What Is Family Therapy And Does It Really Work?
Family therapy can be defined as a form of psychological counseling which proves helpful for family members to be communicative and resolve conflicts. Family therapy is generally provided by a licensed therapist, psychologist or social worker. These individuals are qualified and may be accredited by the American Association For Marriage and Many Therapy.
The concept of family therapy is generally for the short term. It can include all members of the family or just the members who are willing to participate. The specific treatment plan which is offered will depend on the situation of the family. The sessions for family therapy can educate you on the skills needed to enhance family connections and overcome stressful situations even after you have completed the therapy sessions.
Why Family Therapy Is Essential
Family therapy becomes essential when members of the company are having troubled relationships with spouses, family members, and children. The issues that can be discussed during family therapy are various and include financial problems, conflicts between parents and children, marital issues, the impact of substance abuse and mental illnesses which may affect the entire family.
The family concerned can decide to obtain family therapy along with different types of treatments for mental health. This is usually the case when one member of the family is suffering from a mental illness or is addicted because in these conditions individual therapy and rehabilitation also become essential.
Family therapy can assist members of the family to cope with problems such as schizophrenia. However, the individual affected by this condition will be required to continue with an individual treatment plan which will also include medications, personalized counseling and other types of treatment.
If a family member is addicted to substances the family has the option to attend family therapy when the addicted individual is participating in inpatient treatment programs. On occasions, the members of the family can participate in family therapy even when the addict is not seeking treatment of any kind.
Family therapy is beneficial in any situation which is causing grief, stress, anger and conflicts. It can help the family members understand each other better and bring them closer.
How to Prepare For Family Therapy
Initially, you must be asking your primary care doctor to refer you to a therapist. You may also receive recommendations from friends or other family members according to their experiences. Your health insurance provider, state or local mental health organizations and the clergy may also offer you recommendations which will prove helpful. You just need to ensure that the therapist recommended will be suitable for your family. It will also help if you consider the education and the experience of the therapist, his or her location and availability, the number of sessions you need to undergo along with the duration and the fees charged by the therapist including trying to understand whether he or she will accept insurance.
What Can Be Expected From Family Therapy?
The objective of family therapy is to bring several members of the family together for therapy sessions. However, family members who wish to see a family therapist individually also have the option of doing so.
Sessions for family therapy last four approximately one hour or 50 minutes. Family therapy does not continue forever and is generally over in fewer than six months. The number of sessions you would have to undergo will depend on the situation faced by the family and the recommendations of the therapist. During family therapy sessions you can expect to find solutions for the following:
- Examine the ability of your family to resolve problems while expressing thoughts and emotions.
Explore the roles of family members, rules, and patterns of behavior to identify the issues which are contributing conflicts and find methods to deal with such issues.
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the family and also look for difficulties which could be prohibiting family members from confiding with each other.
Family therapy will not resolve conflicts within the family or make difficult situations go away. However, family therapy can help all the members of the family understand each other and give them the skills needed to cope with challenging situations effectively.
