Game of Thrones Characters That Aren’t Dead In The Books

Game of Thrones may be the most popular TV show today. It has everything you could ever ask for. Gorgeous women, handsome guys, action-packed scenes, realistic CGI, medieval-fantasy, clever political plots, betrayals, dragons. We could go on and on, but even though Game of Thrones is such a great show, for people who have read the books they would know that the series is a masterpiece and the show does not give it any justice.

The show has deviated from the books since George RR Martin is an incredibly slow writer and also due to some practical reasons, but it still doesn’t explain why the show had to kill off tons of characters that are still alive in the books. There are tons of characters the show has killed off, but in this article, we will be talking about the most important and most important ones.

Catelyn Stark

Okay, technically in the books Catelyn Stark was killed. She had been massacred along with her son at the Red Wedding, but in the books, after a few days of floating in the river, she was revived by the Brotherhood Without Banners, specifically by Thoros of Myr (you know the priest with a man-bun).

Beric Dondarion (the guy with the eye-patch) gave away his final life in order for Catelyn to be revived. After being reborn, she now goes by the name Lady Stoneheart, and exacting revenge on anyone and everyone that has a connection to the Red Wedding, Freys, Boltons, and Lannisters. It would have been awesome if she appeared on the show, but it seems we will never get to see her.

Shireen Baratheon & Stannis Baratheon

Shireen’s death is one of the most disturbing and most gruesome scenes in GoT, and that’s saying a lot. Shireen was burned at the pyre as an offering to the Lord of Light in order for the snowstorm to stop, but what’s most disgusting about her death was the fact that Stannis allowed her daughter to be burned alive.

In the books, Shireen and her mother Selyse (who also died in the show) are safe and sound at Castle Black. Stannis Baratheon also died in the show; he was killed by Brienne of Tarth for revenge in his involvement in Renly’s death. In the books, Stannis is still alive and is about to fight the Boltons. “Book Stannis” is an okay guy while “Show Stannis” is a complete jerk to say the least.

Tommen Baratheon & Myrcella Baratheon

In the show, Tommen killed himself after he saw his wife and everyone else die a horrific death due to wildfire, but in the books he is still alive, even though Cersei and the Tyrells are already butting heads. Myrcella was poised in the show by Ellaria Sand for revenge of Oberyn Martell’s death, but in the books, Myrcella is still alive but is losing an ear due to a failed Dornish plot to put her on the Iron Throne.

Margaery Tyrell

Margaery Tyrell along with her family and tons of other people died at the Great Sept of Baelor after Cersei blew it up with wildfire. The only one that was left alive was the Queen of Thorns, Olenna Tyrell. In season 7, she was able to give Cersei a massive burn, and get a little pay-back for what happened to her family. In the books, the Tyrells are all alive and well. Well, not counting Loras who they say has been horribly burned and dying.

Okay, this may be the saddest death in the show. Everybody loved Hodor, so we were all sad that he died, but for those of us that have read the books and know that Hodor is still alive, but it seems that there might be some bad things that will happen.

It was revealed that Hodor was destined to sacrifice himself to save Bran from the wights, and it was actually George R.R. Martin himself that told the producers how the stable-boy Wylis turned into the gentle giant “Hodor.” We just all hope that “Book Hodor” does not meet a tragic death like in the show. Please, not Hodor! Anyone but Hodor!
